William Pitt the Younger: Britain's Greatest Prime Minister?

William Pitt the Younger is an almost Shakespearean character. He became Prime Minister of Great Britain at twenty-four — an age at which most men of his era were still arguing about Latin translations and running up debts at university. He governed the most powerful nation on earth for nearly two decades, steered it through revolution, war, and constitutional crisis, and died at forty-six, worn to the bone by the effort. Had he been a character in a novel, critics would have called him implausible.
